Having a medical imaging scan, such as an X-ray, CT or ultrasound, is often one step in your care. Many patients wonder what happens next. At Scope Radiology in Clayton, Victoria, we believe in transparent communication throughout your entire experience. This guide will walk you through the process that unfolds after your radiology appointment, explaining how your images are interpreted, how results are delivered, and what you can expect as the next steps in your care.
1. Image Acquisition and Quality Assurance
Immediately after your scan, your images are securely transferred to our digital system. Our radiographers and sonographers check that all the pictures your doctor asked for have been taken and are clear enough to read. This careful process helps give our radiologists clear images to work with.
2. A radiologist reviews your images
A radiologist is a doctor who specialises in reading medical images. Each image set is carefully reviewed and interpreted by one of our radiologists. They will:
- Analyse the images: Look closely at your X-ray, CT or ultrasound images.
- Correlate with Clinical Information: Review your referral and any relevant medical history provided by your referring doctor, so that their interpretation is clinically relevant.
- Formulate a Diagnosis: Based on their findings, they will formulate a diagnostic impression or identify areas requiring further investigation.
3. The Radiology Report
Following their interpretation, the radiologist will generate a comprehensive written report. This report is a detailed summary of their findings, observations, and diagnostic conclusions. It is a critical document that your referring doctor will use to guide your treatment plan. The report typically includes:
- Patient Demographics: Your name, date of birth, and other identifying information.
- Clinical Indication: The reason for your scan, as provided by your referring doctor.
- Procedure Performed: Details of the specific imaging study.
- Findings: A description of what the radiologist observed in the images.
- Impression/Conclusion: The radiologist’s diagnostic opinion, summarising the key findings and their significance.
- Recommendations (if applicable): Suggestions for further imaging or clinical correlation if needed.
4. Delivery of Results to Your Referring Doctor
At Scope Radiology, we prioritise the timely and secure delivery of your results to your referring doctor. Most reports reach your referring doctor within 24 to 48 hours of your scan. CTCA, CT calcium score and lung cancer screening reports usually take 3 to 5 business days. We use secure digital platforms for efficient and confidential transmission.
Urgent Findings
If the radiologist sees something that needs attention sooner, they contact your referring doctor directly. Your doctor will then arrange the next steps with you.
5. Discussing Your Results with Your Doctor
It is important to remember that your referring doctor is the best person to discuss your radiology results with you. They have your complete medical history and can integrate the imaging findings with your symptoms and other clinical information to provide a comprehensive explanation and determine the most appropriate next steps for your care. We encourage you to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to review your results.
6. Accessing Your Images and Reports
When you visit, we give you an access card with secure login details for the Patient Portal. Your images are usually available within about 2 hours of your scan. Your report goes to your referring doctor first and is released to you 7 days later.
We aim to get your report to your doctor promptly, so they can talk it through with you. If you have any questions about the post-scan process, please don’t hesitate to ask our friendly team.
